I find it to be a fun show and while some of the fandom can go overboard there are really fun and sweet people in the fandom. That said I will try to keep this a fan girl squeeing free review. This volume is the collection of the comics that dealt with the arc with the bitterness and anger that fueled Nightmare Moon.

With the help of Luna the remaining ponies must go to the moon to save their friend. However they are too late to prevent the force behind Nightmare Moon from enacting its plan. Now to save their friend they must use the power of friendship without the help of the elements of harmony. A fun little thing about the comics is studying some of the panels you find cute or funny little things added. Like the Gravity Falls cameo in on panel.

See if you can spot it. You can certainly tell the artist enjoyed their work on this project. For the rest of the review and rating please check me out at Musekicker's Reading Place. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Season 1 Episode 2 - The Elements Of Harmony

This series has been so reliable as a happy antidote to the chaos of the world right now. The message of the power of love and friendship is a really valuable reminder when there's so much despair to go around.

May 11, Jamie rated it it was amazing. What a cute little story in this world to continue the overall plot line of the Ponies and how their friendship helps save the world. Jun 29, Franz Pajunen rated it it was amazing Shelves: comics. Oct 13, Kay rated it liked it. Aug 09, Jen The Starry-Eyed Revue rated it really liked it Shelves: , kids , graphic-novels-comics , katiebug. Okay, so I'm really behind the times and storyline of My Little Pony.

But my daughter is a huge fan of My Little Pony, most especially Pinkie Pie that was the theme of her 5th birthday party , and we watch the cartoon together every Saturday morning. So, when I saw this up for grabs on Netgalley, I knew it was meant to be. And since Katie didn't feel like drawing a book cover for her weekly feature this week, we decided to review this one together I'll translate her excitement as best I can.

Translation : Mommy, this book is kind of scaring me. I hope they find the missing pony soon. But it could've used more Pinkie Pie. More Pinkie Pie, please!!! Despite a darker premise, the ponies remain true to their characters and provide the usual comic relief. There are some scary nightmare creatures that might be a bit much for some kids, but Katie did alright with them.

The artwork for the nightmare creatures was dark and eerie, and the writing for their dialogue was done in red inside of black cartoon bubbles, which made for difficult reading on Katie's Nook, but I don't think that will be as much of an issue in the final print editions. The story was adorable, and we both really enjoyed it. And I always like the messages the ponies have to teach us about love and friendship. This one focused on self-esteem and believing in yourself and trusting in your friends to do the same.

All in all, it was really cute, and we can't wait until the next volume! This review can also be found at The Starry-Eyed Revue. Aug 10, Diamond rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels , favorites-of Thank you to Diamond Book Distributors for providing me with a electronic review copy in exchange for an honest review. I love MLP. I'm definitely one of the many faithful viewers of the TV show, and, like all of us I was crushed at the end of the season. Well, fellow bronies I have a solution for ya. Pick up and read these graphic novels! No, they're not only for kids.

Pshaw, is the show only for kids? NO, it's not. It's lessons transcend age. It's Thank you to Diamond Book Distributors for providing me with a electronic review copy in exchange for an honest review. It's awesome. So now that's out of the way I want to discuss why I loved Vol. It felt singular and the characters were exactly like they are portrayed on the show. True, in Vol. It made the story feel slightly forced. The great thing about these graphic novels too is that you can just jump in at volume 2 if you want.

Never seen the show? No problem, open a crisp new comic and you know what My Little Pony is about. Still not convinced? Love is the key ingredient of friendship. If you truly love someone, there will always be a trait you cherish the most -- and all you have to do if a loved one is annoying you is to remember that love able trait s. Be brave like Princess Moonbeam. Even if your mistake ends up hurting them, all you have to do is ask for forgiveness and you can have a second or even third! View 2 comments. Sep 19, Erika Williams rated it it was amazing. I love My Little Pony and have been devastated since season 3 ended, however, this comic was exactly what I needed to fill that pony shaped hole in my heart.

This feels so much like the show, that it honestly just should have been made into one of their beautiful two parters, perhaps with some singing. Perhaps like Nightmare Moon I love My Little Pony and have been devastated since season 3 ended, however, this comic was exactly what I needed to fill that pony shaped hole in my heart. Perhaps like Nightmare Moon where she just sounds like herself but with that booming, authoritative undertone? Because Princess Luna promised them a kingdom of their own, and they still want it. The story itself is great for young girls about valuing yourself in spite of your insecurities and fears.

By making the focus of the lesson on Rarity, it helps show young girls that your physical appearance has nothing to do with your sense of value, which is a great lesson that even some adults still need to learn. And by that I mean sometimes the ponies looked weird, anatomically speaking. Like, Fluttershy, how did you possibly scrunch yourself into that shape, it looks positively painful, you poor dear. Also, is it just me, or does that little creature Fluttershy found on the moon now have two dads? Aug 28, Ashley Ferguson rated it really liked it.

Find this review and more at The A P Book Club I really enjoyed the first volume of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comics probably way more than I should have , so I was pretty stoked to find out that there was a second volume coming out. Because who doesn't love the ponies?!

And they're up against an old enemy? Seriously, recipe for awesome right there. And yes, this series is totally a guilty pleasure that helps me to relive my childhood. Compared to the first volume, these ponies are drawn more closely to what they look like in the show, so that was pretty neat.

And all of the colors are just gorgeous and convey the moods that they're supposed to.

When the ponies are in trouble, things get very dark and shadowy. When their friendship triumphs, the colors become more vibrant and welcoming. The artwork is beautiful, and made this comic a pleasure to read. And I definitely think it would hold the attention of a little kid who is just being introduced to comics and make them want to read more.

The story is also really sweet. I mean, it does get a little scary at times, so I wouldn't recommend it for very young children, but I think any kid old enough to watch the show and not get scared should be fine.

Plus, we get to see some familiar characters other than the Mane Six, and it's really interesting to have their stories developed a little more than what we already know. Luna is one of my favorite characters, and I loved that she had a bigger part in this volume than she's had since the Nightmare Moon episodes. Like the show and the first volume, this set of comics is chock full of morals and lessons about life and love and friendship. It helps teach about insecurities and the power of working together and trusting your friends.

I would definitely recommend this to fans of the show, and to young readers who are just getting started with comics and graphic novels. Aug 21, Molly rated it it was amazing.

Where to Buy

The bulletin board in my office has a herd of twenty small plastic ponies marching across the top of the frame and I've been known to quote Twilight Sparkle in times of stress or when a book I'm particularly excited about comes into to the library. For example: "Get back! All of you! This is my book. I liked the graphic novel for all same reasons I like the show - it's witty, chock-full of inside jokes, and the characters are independent girls fillies? And, of course, the moral lessons and underlying themes are all about the importance of friendship and being true to one's self.

All of this is achieved without relying on saccharine sweetness or outdated tropes. Everything works really well as a graphic novel. The animation translates well to book form and I love that the one-liners and asides to the audience get their own panels. The plot is fast-paced and fun, with just enough drama to keep it exciting. Although there's never any doubt that there will be a happy ending! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, boy or girl, tween or adult, who enjoys the world of ponies and Equesteria. Nov 06, Dena Batch of Books rated it really liked it.

I requested a copy of this book because I knew my kids would love it and I was right. They loved it. I have two little girls, so My Little Pony is much loved and much discussed in our house. I noticed a couple of things about this book that really made it a hit with my girls. First, the graphic novel format really is a brilliant way to deliver a story. There are lots of pictures, lots of dialogue, and no long sequences of boring descriptions or inward struggles by the characters. It isn't a terri I requested a copy of this book because I knew my kids would love it and I was right.

It isn't a terribly long book, so it can be read fairly quickly and keep a child's interest through the whole thing. The characters and their personalities remain true to the TV show, which is important to keep that consistency. The plot itself is precisely what you would expect from My Little Pony. Nothing more, nothing less. It is a little cheesy, but it works. The illustrations are gorgeous. A lot of times, with these commercialized stories, I forget that someone had to create all the artwork, that a real person sat at their drawing table or computer for hours on end.

Not all of the pictures are perfect, and some are a bit confusing, but the majority of the book is filled with beautifully rendered art. Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My blog: Books for Kids Oct 14, Vania rated it really liked it Shelves: reviewed , comics. It's slowly getting better, but that's not saying much. Again, the plot does leave much to be desired, although it does show some signs of complexity once in awhile. There are some interesting details on Luna's fall and we get to see how she grew into her new design seen in season 2 of the show.

The introduced villain, which everyone should know by now from the intensive spoilers around the fandom, is pretty intimidating and adorable at the same time, but the art falls flat at times and the initial impact of her reveal dies away pretty quickly. However, character struggles proved pretty real in this volume. After all, a story based upon a force which shows you your deepest and darkest nightmares is bound to be a real treat for anyone who likes emotionally-tortured characters.

Rarity's inner nightmare really resonated with me and probably will resonate with plenty of other people. I still would love it if an actual arc through multiple volumes happened, but we'll just have to wait and see. I received a copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. So, anyone who knows me knows that I am a My Little Pony fan. Put something My Little Pony in front of me, and I will consume it in some fashion or another. That being said, this Friendship is Magic was a mane above the micro-series I have been reading. Beautiful, colorful illustrations and ponies make it a win regardless, but this one, as might be expected, had more room for plot and character development.

Having so much of I received a copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Having so much of Princess Luna was fabulous, and all of the Nightmare illustrations were great. I was also a huge fan of Larry and Jerome. Nightmare Moon has abandoned the denizens of the moon and been freed by the Mane six and their powers of harmony, so the next step is to split up the mane six.

Each of the ponies has to face a deep-seated fear including Luna and overcome that fear in order to help Rarity and all of the other ponies. These plots do tend to all center around friendship and self-worth, and hey, why not? These are good lessons. I have fun reading My Little Pony, but I also wouldn't mind all of my nieces and nephews reading these comics.

They're fun and they have good takeaways. Oct 21, Melissa McShane rated it liked it Shelves: own. I admit it. I like the My Little Pony reboot. It helps that it was created by someone who has a genuine love of the franchise and saw the possibilities for turning it into something bigger than the merchandise. It also helps that we are still looking for the secret cameras they hid in our house, because Pinkie Pie is clearly based on my second daughter.

It's uncanny.

But mainly it's just funny and cute and heartwarming. In this volume, the darkness that turned Princess Luna into Night I admit it. In this volume, the darkness that turned Princess Luna into Nightmare Moon is back and looking to take over again. Twilight Sparkle and her friends have to face it, even when it means going up against one of their own. I liked that Rarity, the glamorous unicorn who's obsessed with fashion, is the one whose weakness fear of being abandoned the enemy exploits. She's always walking a line between being shallow and being the spirit of generosity, so this gave her a little more depth.

And it's always nice to see more of Princess Luna, whose own fears get an airing too. This reads like an episode of the show, so nice work on the part of the writers. That's right. I just typed "Twilight Sparkle" without a hint of irony. I feel no shame. Twilight Sparkle lives in a library just like I do. Aug 13, Sarah Maddaford rated it liked it Shelves: can-be-read-alone , juvenile-reader , fantasy , graphic-novel , spinoff , arc , e-book. I was expecting at least some connection from Volume One which seemed to only have the characters in common with the TV show , but this had more in common with the show.

There were no references to the previous volume and I was confused by some bits until I realized that they must have been in the show and pretty prominently too. Overall, the story was as goofy as expected. Everything revolves around the power of friendship and people are made stronger by banding together with their friends. I I was expecting at least some connection from Volume One which seemed to only have the characters in common with the TV show , but this had more in common with the show. I thought it was an interesting touch that the typically vain pony Rarity was the one picked to by the darkness.

I personally would have gone for Applejack or Rainbow Dash because they are both insecure of themselves without outside pressure at least in their nightmares. Once you get past the corniness and the fact that each pony is fairly one dimensional and that I find Pinkie Pie annoying , the story is quick and a good read as long as you aren't expecting anything too profound. It's fun and has made me consider suggesting them for the library. There isn't very much violence even the pony battle scenes are so tame it's hard to tell that it is a battle.

There is absolutely no cursing and the only sex is Spike's crush on Rarity. Aug 10, Jess at Such a Novel Idea rated it it was amazing Shelves: netgalley , own-arc , favorites , reads , to-review. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have two things to admit: 1. As a child, My Little Pony was my favorite Toy, tv show, bedding, etc. So, having a daughter and getting to watch the reboot with her has been the bees knees. I love playing 'ponies' with her, watching the new episodes on Saturday morning, and even going to see the movie this summer.

Previo I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Previously, I didn't realize this was something that existed. So, when my daughter and I sat down to read this together, we were both excited. I like comic books and even though she is five, my daughter was able to keep up with the style of the book.
