In fact, the couple is warned on countless occasions that they should leave because the house will eventually kill them. Why do people stay in bad situations? I wanted to scream at the main characters that they should have left after the initial ghostly attack. They stay. While there would be no story if they left, I still found this incredibly frustrating. Even the people in The Amityville Horror left after about a month I thought that was a poorly written book as well.

There are plenty of paths the book takes us down, but I never got a clear resolution to them. I felt deeply disappointed with Anatomy of a Haunting. I wanted to love this book. Inevitably, there will be those who read vociferously in this genre and will be able to forgive the flaws I saw in this book, and those people are the best audience for this kind of writing. Based on true events, this book is loaded with great black and white photos of the people who lived in the haunted home years ago. The pictures make the story even more creepy and brings everyone to life. I was totally sucked into this haunting! During the massive emigrations to America due to the Irish Potato Famine of the early 19th century, a young couple came to Iowa from Ireland. What seemed like a storybook romance soon became abuse, alcoholism, and gratuitous violence and deaths. What was evil in these individuals lived on, inhabiting the house, causing fires and possessions.

In Jon Summers, a professor, and his wife Carrie, an attorney, inherit the property from her deceased aunt, who died in one of the many fires in the house. Carrie immediately loves the house, but Jon hates it.

However, he agrees to move in, which proves to be the worst mistake of their lives. The story is worked out in multiple layers, as the Summers try to investigate the occurrences in their new home, which include sightings and nightmares. Through the reading of the journals of the original housewife-journals which Carrie is inexplicably led to discover-the history of the house and property come forth, and it is abusive and violent. Author Lee Strong does an admirable job of putting together the story of this Iowa farm property, both past and present as of , and a terrifying story it is.

I remember reading a comment by Jay Anson that when he was asked to write the Amityville Horror story, he was given a kernel of truth and was then told to make stuff up to make the story as scary as possible. I get the sense that the same kind of situation is going on here. I can buy paranormal activity that manifests itself in the form of lights, noises, small objects moving It sounds to me like the author took a lot of instances that probably had very rational explanations and then assigned a supernatural cause to them.

Oh, and then he made a bunch of stuff up to make it extra-scary. And honestly, that would all be OK if it was written well There were moments of me thinking: "Wow, that was actually written kind of nicely. In contrast, Amityville Horror probably has about the same amount of truth, but I think it's a great book because it's decently written. This was still a worthwhile read for me because I picked up some ideas and inspiration for my own book Jul 22, Shelly rated it it was ok Shelves: paranormal.

This book is supposedly a true tale of a haunted house, but I found many of the events so highly exaggerated as to be unbelievable. A ghost who is so fully formed as to appear to be a real person, and who intelligently interacts with homeowners is a paranormal investigator's dream, especially one who does handyman work without asking to be paid.

Why would a woman insist on living in a house her husband hated?

Why would a couple remain living in an obviously dangerous house when they have the economic resources with which to move?

If, after progressive warnings and escalating events, the couple still chose to stay, why would they not have called in some type of spiritual or religious expert to help clear the ghosts or ask for advice? I just could not believe the actions of Carlie, the protagonist. This might be based on a true story, but the interesting factual events are so buried in embellishment that it might as well be fiction. May 22, Evan rated it really liked it. Now imagine that the house wants you dead. For Jon and Carlie Summers, the nightmare begins when they move into an inherited home in rural Iowa. Leaving behind their busy lives in Chicago, Jon and Carlie are dragged into a horrifying spiral of violent dreams, illnesses, and possessions. Uncovering a vast evil hidden for decades in crates of buried journals, Jon and Carlie are forced to relive the sinister history of the house and its legacy of abuse, denial, and obsession.

Anatomy of a Haunting is a terrifying true story about one house and its inhabitants who have been pushed to the brink of insanity and death. My Views: I am a sucker for a good ghost story or a haunted house tale. This one was supposedly non-fiction so it was all the better.

Do ghost exist? I don't really know.

My science degree says "no" I'm not at all sure and in spite of my enthusiasm for the stories, that I really want to know. The author believes it and I'm sure that Carlie Summers believes it as it seems did most of the small Iowa town located close to Des Moines. What the book will do that I'm absolutely sure of is give you cold chills and make you sit with your back against a wall to read it.

Don't look over you shoulder under any circumstances. This book provided hours of enjoyment but failed to answer my question. Jan 02, Nikki rated it really liked it. The writing doesn't come across as a non-fiction type to me. It did captivate me, and I wanted to know what was happening next.

Lots of action, continuous horrors and lots of heartache all are intertwined between these pages. The book flowed from one piece to the next and is written in the form of a narrative rather than a non-fiction work full of facts. Well worth the read, but you may be like me and have to remind yourself that what you are reading is supposed to be a work of non-fiction. May 27, Belle Meri rated it did not like it Shelves: dnf-books. If - and this is a big if - this book is based on a true story then the protagonists, Carlie and her husband Jon, are stupider than the cliched blonde in a b-movie horror film.

I gave up about halfway through because none of the actions of the people in the story make logical sense in a real world situation but make perfect sense in a horror novel or movie. So, this is one book that has no clue what it's trying to be, the writing is clunky as all hell, and I just can't recommend it to anyone, es If - and this is a big if - this book is based on a true story then the protagonists, Carlie and her husband Jon, are stupider than the cliched blonde in a b-movie horror film.

So, this is one book that has no clue what it's trying to be, the writing is clunky as all hell, and I just can't recommend it to anyone, especially since I couldn't force myself to finish it! What A Whopping Fish Tale! Well Written, no typo's, a bit too long. I sincerely doubt this is an actual accounting of a haunt by a human spirit.

Possibly by a demon and a slew of damned souls. I object to the author trying to pass this off as true. It's actually not a bad story, however far too many details would be unknown to the author. I regret paying to read this work of fiction. Jun 06, Tabitha Chamberlain rated it liked it. Jul 18, Megan rated it liked it Shelves: nonfic Definitely exaggerated from the true story, but the true story underneath is scary enough. The writing was sort of uneven--really lovely in parts and choppy in others. Feb 05, Kylie rated it it was ok. This story really didn't read right.

No one acted in a remotely rational way. I mean, seriously. Who spends months in a house with that level of supernatural activity? Why would Jon ever agree to move there. It's not like Carlie tied him up and forced him to move. I get why she wanted to go back to that house - but why take so long to make the decision to leave?

And why didn't Jon figure out that Smitty wasn't who he said he was what he said he was way sooner. None of it seems rational. And ye This story really didn't read right. And yet it is written in such a way that we are meant to believe this is exactly how it happened. I just don't buy it. Jan 09, Francisco J. Even though Andrew did some unspeakably horrible things to others, there is still a part of me that feels for the unimaginable pain and suffering that he was made to endure at the hands of his step father and step brothers; may the souls of all those who suffered unnecessarily find peace soon, even those that may not deserve it from our perspective, like Ian, Patrick, and the other McPherson boy, because even Jesus Christ forgave that thief that was crucified on a cross near him:.

Mar 21, Jessica Chittester rated it it was ok. Ghost stories aren't my thing; though I do enjoy the occasional 'haunted house' tv show. However this book didn't do it for me. It's clear that from the very beginning the house and it's ghosts are not friendly, and those spirits that are nice are outweighed by the evil ones. At the first sign of trouble - the first viscous haunt - these people should've packed their bags and fled but they didn't.

They threw aside common sense and that is what did this book in for me. The thought of what had happened behind that boarded-up window chilled his spine. Something else about the house captivated her. To her, the house emanated a sense of desolation and abandonment, as if it were lonely—as if it were waiting for her. For over years, no one has escaped the evil that is the McPherson House. After inheriting the house in , Jon and Carlie Summers soon discover that the cruel and abusive past that encompasses their new home, is drawing them deep into its dark and demented history; a history steeped in abuse, denial, obsession, and murder.

Ultimately, the violent nature of the house and the evil that possesses it, wins out—leaving one dead—and one on the very brink of insanity. Follow Lee Strong on Twitter.
