In the ensuing chaos, three LSTs were hit by torpedoes. It is estimated that more than American soldiers and sailors lost their lives in the Exercise Tiger disaster. Fears that the reports on the disaster could alert Germany to invasion plans led the Allies to declare the event secret, and the catastrophe remains little known, even today.
